The Club

About twelve years ago with the birth of my first
My bubble of ignorance was painfully burst
I’d been told what to expect, but as we all know
You just can’t imagine how things will go
Tales of trials around routines and feeds
And that I’d never again experience sleep
But forewarned is forearmed, or, so they say
And we met challenges presented each day
Suffice it to say, I survived the first year
On a cocktail of hormones, caffeine, and tears
It can’t have been quite such an unbearable fate
Because, nineteen months later, give or take
We welcomed our second bundle of joy
I was a new club member to Mother of Boys
Reality Check

The early years were a blur— in all honesty
I remember nappies, washing, and cold cups of tea
I learned to run fast and patrol three-60 degrees
And to navigate play gyms on hands and on knees
They explored mud and trucks, weeing and giggles
Nudity is an essential part of being little
Bugs and dirt and climbing and noise
Were just as important as blocks and toys
There were many mud pies, tall trees, and fast bikes
With wrestling, jostling, tumbling and fights
I was blessed with moments I’d not trade or miss
Being wrapped up in cuddles or surprised by a kiss
To date, I can say, one of life’s greatest joys
Is being a proud member of Mother of Boys
Onward and Upward

They continued to grow and went off to school
Where they navigated life by a new set of rules
Sit down, sit up, sit straight, sit still
Don’t move, be quiet – it was a hard pill
Thankfully lunch breaks are a time of release
To run, eat food, and to be let off the “leash”
Tumbles with friends makes them better equipped
To go back to the classroom and sit, sit, sit…sit
Like boys the world over, ours occupy space
They do it wildly, loudly and without much grace
At times they’re fearless; taking the world by storm
But then struggle to find the “acceptable” norm
To be fair to them, and to the rest of their crew
I know them to be loving, gentle, and sensitive too
Bundles of Joy

Girls are amazing, their company I enjoy
But I’m blessed to belong to Mother of Boys
