Sheep are licking rocks on the hillside
The cows chew memories on the plain
Horses are eating dust in the field
And we’re all looking to the sky for rain
Wildlife come scratching for a scrap
The chook water’s the new meeting ground
Collect all the eggs as soon as they’re laid
Or not a skerrick of shell will be found
Irrigators are running on empty
The bores are threatening to quit
The river is low and the dam’s dried up
Whilst the ducks are pilfering the pick
Wallabies are drinking from the sullage soak
The lawn now matches the drive
Everything wears dust like a cloak
Cause there’s not much left that’s alive
Don’t flush the loo unless you have to
Send shower water to the veggie plot
Let the washing drain into the garden
Save used cooking water for the pots
Wear your clothes for more than a day
At a push, you could wear them for a few
A clean car is a decadent memory
Like rain clouds, balmy nights, and dew
On high alert and watching like hawks
For sparks, smoke clouds and red haze
‘Cause dry, arid land and bush tinder
Mixed with winds are setting us ablaze
Tapping the tank each hour ev’ry day
Is not going to make levels increase
Dig deep, pray hard and find hope
Until we’re reprieved a release
The predictions on BOM are a farce
The information provided is moot
This period is a trial that’ll pass
But not before it’s stuck in the boot
Things have to change, no doubt
Our seasons are warped and skewed
Spring’s now a symbol for drought
And the wet season has up and moved
But we’ve all seen worse and survived
And we’ll make it through somehow
We’ll push on till the wet arrives
But pray to God it’s not too long now
Reflection:
- How do you cope with the drought?
- What practices do you have in place to make the water go further?
